$15,000 donated to environmental nonprofits in Santa Barbara

SANTA BARBARA, Calif., Aug. 26, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Cox Communications and The Trust for Public Land  announced Rebecca Claassen as Santa Barbara's 2014 Cox Conserves Hero. As her nonprofit of choice, the Environmental Defense Center will receive $10,000.

Inspired by her two-year old daughter, Claassen used her healthcare background to educate local citizens on the impact of toxins in the local water supply. She's been the catalyst behind creating a group of informed and engaged volunteers who promote clean water.

Andrea Adams-Morden was the program's runner up and selected the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden to receive $5,000 on her behalf.

Susan Epstein and Martin Camp are previous recipients of Santa Barbara's Cox Conserves Heroes award.

The Cox Conserves Heroes program recognizes volunteers for creating, preserving or enhancing outdoor spaces. The program was created through a partnership between The Trust for Public Land and Cox Enterprises, the parent company of Cox Communications. Cox Conserves Heroes takes place in Arizona (Phoenix and Tucson); California (Orange County, San Diego and Santa Barbara); Georgia (Atlanta); Louisiana (Acadiana, Baton Rouge and New Orleans); Virginia (Fairfax County/Fredericksburg, Hampton Roads and Roanoke); and Washington (Seattle).

Since being launched in 2008, the Cox Conserves Heroes program has donated more than $400,000 to environmental nonprofits and recognized more than 130 volunteers.
