Drone Racing League Set for Take Off
09/12/2018
The growing popularity of the Drone Racing League means that the newest season beginning Sept. 6 is approaching with more anticipation than ever.
Cox Communications is sponsoring the league’s 2018 World Championship Series and one of the fastest drone pilots, Nick Willard, aka “Wild Willy.”
“It’s a pretty no-brainer partnership,” said Wild Willy, who placed third overall in the 2016 and 2017 seasons. “They’re all about fast internet and great connectivity with their Panoramic WiFi you can get all around the house. We really value connectivity during drone racing. You don’t want to have anything fall out of the sky.”
Wearing headsets that provide a view from the cockpit, pilots maneuver their drones through obstacle courses at speeds of up to 80 mph.
The series includes seven racing competitions that will air in 14 episodes on ESPN and be broadcast in more than 75 countries. During the 2018 season, pilots will take flight in elaborate spots including:
-
Woodward West, the world-class camp for pro skateboarders and BMXers in Tehachapi, California.
-
University of Arizona's Biosphere 2, the largest enclosed ecological observatory on the planet, located in Oracle, Arizona.
-
The Adventuredome at Circus Circus Las Vegas, a five-acre indoor amusement park in Las Vegas, Nevada.
-
Allianz Riviera, a gigantic football stadium in Nice, France.
-
BMW Welt, the multisensory brand and product experience center of the BMW Group, located in the heart of Munich, Germany.
-
Jeddah, Saudi Arabia
