Cox Joins Evolution of Esports

08/02/2018

If you’ve never heard of the video game Overwatch, get ready because its popularity is only growing. Need proof? Consider the recent news that Cox Enterprises has partnered with Province, Inc., to form Atlanta Esports Ventures (AEV), a joint venture which will own and operate a new Atlanta Overwatch League team.

What is Overwatch League?
The Overwatch League is the first global professional esports league with city-based teams across Asia, Europe and North America. Created by Blizzard Entertainment, the Overwatch League is a fast-paced competition designed for engaging gameplay and spectator experiences.

“The esports phenomenon is only getting bigger and the Overwatch League is at the center of the excitement,” said Dallas Clement, EVP and Chief Financial Officer of Cox Enterprises. “Atlanta has some of the most passionate fans in the world — and now we get to bring this energy to the Overwatch League. We are thrilled to help lead the evolution of esports by building a team in our hometown."

A Growing Industry
According to a Newzoo’s market research report, esports will be a $900 million industry in 2018 and is on track for rapid and exponential growth.

"The popularity of Overwatch and esports in general has created a diverse fan base that we in Atlanta are excited to engage,” said Paul Hamilton, President and CEO of AEV. “With the creativity of Blizzard Entertainment and the determination of Atlanta Esports Ventures, we are poised to create the preeminent esports team in the heart of the Southeast.”

The Overwatch League’s teams are permanent franchises representing major cities around the world. Eleven other regions are represented on the Overwatch roster: Boston, Dallas, the state of Florida, Houston, London, Los Angeles (the Los Angeles Gladiators and the Los Angeles Valiant), New York City, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Seoul and Shanghai.
