Company pledges to reduce water usage, improve water quality through Cox Conserves sustainability program

ATLANTA, March 22, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Today, Cox Enterprises announced its participation in the White House Water Summit. Held in conjunction with the United Nations World Water Day, the Summit raised awareness of water issues and potential solutions.

Here are simple tips you can use to conserve water.

Cox was one of more than 150 organizations representing the private, government, academic and nonprofit sectors to demonstrate an ongoing commitment to water conservation.

"Water and wetlands are valuable resources, and we must do everything possible to protect them," said Cox Enterprises Chairman Jim Kennedy. "Expanding populations and development are putting a strain on them. However, there are simple conservation steps we can all take as individuals. And, there are new technologies that are helping companies be good environmental stewards. We can make a difference together."

Cox Enterprises has long been committed to environmental stewardship and conservation. Since 2007, the company has invested more than $100 million in sustainability and conservation through its Cox Conserves program. The sustainability program promotes and supports positive environmental change in Cox's operations and in the community. Cox aims to send zero waste to landfill by 2024 and become both water and carbon neutral by 2044.

Cox plans to reduce water usage by 6.5 percent year over year through programs across our campuses and business operations that lessen our footprint and balance necessary use with meaningful restoration.

Cox is committed to reduce water usage and improve water quality through:

  • Water Reclamation Projects: Conserve approximately 10 million gallons of water annually through Water Conservation Centers. A sophisticated four-step process cleans and reuses water at auto reconditioning facilities.
  • Cleanups and Awareness Projects: Partner with American Rivers and Ocean Conservancy for cleanups in Cox locations across the nation, as well as generate awareness through public service announcements on Cox's media properties.
  • Technology Projects: Embrace new technology and utilize water-efficient fixtures throughout the company's facilities to save millions of gallons annually.
  • Landscaping Projects: Embrace xeriscaping and replace turf grass with drought-tolerant plants at locations with large land footprints to save more than 42 million gallons of water annually.

Cox previously pledged to reduce its carbon footprint through the American Business Act on Climate. In addition to the company's commitment to conservation, Kennedy has personally funded wetlands education and outreach programs at universities across the nation.
