Locations in downtown San Diego, North County among first for faster speeds

SAN DIEGO, Aug. 12, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Cox Communications today announced that it is launching its gigabit Internet service for residential customers in San Diego. Marketed under the brand name "G1GABLASTSM," Cox will offer speeds 100 times faster than the average Internet speed in the U.S. today.

A Cox Communications Field Services Technician readies a home for gigabit Internet service, now available in parts of San Diego. Cox has been deploying gigabit speeds to businesses for more than a decade, and has committed to offering residential gigabit speeds in all of its markets by the end of 2016.

Joined by San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer, City Councilman Todd Gloria, and other local dignitaries, Cox announced the launch of its gigabit Internet speeds at a special event in downtown San Diego near the Pinnacle, a new 45-story apartment building in downtown's East Village that is among the first locations in San Diego to receive the new service.

In addition to the Pinnacle, Cox's initial launch of G1GABLAST will include some new single-family home communities in Escondido and north San Diego.

"Cox is the first provider in San Diego County to offer gigabit speeds to residential customers," said Dave Bialis, Senior Vice President and Region Manager for Cox Communications' California operations. "We're excited to once again be on the forefront of bringing the latest technology to our customers, and we'll continue investing in our network and our community."

Cox has been deploying gigabit speeds to businesses for more than a decade, and has committed to offering residential gigabit speeds in all of its markets by the end of 2016. The company has already launched G1GABLAST service in parts of Irvine, Calif., Phoenix, Las Vegas, New Orleans and Baton Rouge, La., and Omaha, Neb.

Gigabit speeds enable customers to:

  • Run all of their devices at the same time (laptops, tablets, smart TVs, smartphones, gaming systems)
  • Download an HD movie in less than 60 seconds;
  • Download 100 songs in three seconds.

With speeds as fast as 1,000 megabits per second, residential gigabit speeds from Cox will also deliver a more powerful home network and rich broadband-enabled services to customers.

Also today, Cox announced that customers with the Ultimate Internet package will see their speeds double later this from 150 megabits per second to 300 megabits per second.  Committed to offering access and choice, Cox has increased broadband speeds more than 1,000 percent over the past 14 years.

In the last 10 years, Cox has invested more than $15 billion in its communities through infrastructure upgrades to deliver video, phone and high-speed Internet and home security and automation service to homes and businesses in the company's service area. Additionally, the company gives tens of millions of dollars annually in cash and in-kind contributions to support the communities in which it operates.
